PARISHES NEWSLETTER

The Catholic Community Connection

Dear Friends,

“Raise a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Proverbs 22:6

There are any number of times in the course of a day that I give God thanks for the parents that I had. Time and time again I think of life lessons that I learned from my parents, John and
Rosie Clegg. One such time was this past week.

I was going out to get something for lunch and stopped by one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. I got a “to-go” box and saddled up the buffet. After making my usual selections I headed to the cash register to pay for my food. The total came to $4.66. I handed the cashier a five dollar bill and he began to ring up my order. As he did, I told him that I needed a receipt. He punched a few buttons on the cash register, got a confused look, punched a few more buttons, a got a second confused look, and then figured it out and the receipt printed. This whole time he was holding my $5 bill. He tore off the receipt and gave me my change--5 and 34 cents. I immediately corrected his mistake and took only my 34 cents change. He smiled and said, “Thank you for being honest.

Many people would have just taken the full amount.” While driving home to eat I remembered a similar situation. I was about 10 or 11 years old and my dad sent me down to the store to get a gallon of milk. It was probably about $1.19 back then. He gave me a 10 dollar bill. I paid for the milk with the 10 and the cashier gave me change for a 20. My ten-year-old brain thought that it had won the lottery. I kept the change, putting the $8.81 into one pocket to give back to my dad and putting my take (a crisp ten dollar bill) in my other pocket. When I got home I told my dad the story and how lucky I was.

I wasn’t lucky for long. Not only did my dad march me back to the store to hand back my ill-gotten gain, but I also got a spanking for “cheating” the man. “But it wasn’t my fault,” I insisted. My dad said simply, “Do you want another one?”

“Raise a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Thanks mom and dad! And thanks to all you moms and dads today who dare to be good parents to your children!

Lovingly in Christ,
Fr. Tom
